Welcome to the Social Justice Center!

Social Justice Center History

The Social Justice Center (SJC) at Washington University, established in 1998, has worked to focus efforts, information, and activities around campus that combat prejudice and promote social justice within the WU community and in the communities of St. Louis. This was a collaborative effort from the Office of Residential Life and colleagues from several departments throughout the Washington University community. Every year, the center has evolved and progressed in the types of resources, student leadership models, and programming it offers. The SJC continues to aspire to motivate individuals to apply what they learn and take a stand against social injustices within their circles of influence.

Over the past few years, the Social Justice Center has focused on:

  • Creating a Social Justice Center Student Group, which leads educational programs for residential floors/communities and interested student groups, and which creates monthly Social Justice Center sponsored programs.
  • Funding a graduate fellow to work solely with the Social Justice Center (funded by Residential Life).
  • Forming lasting and meaningful relationships with student groups on campus such as Students Taking on Multicultural Pursuits (STOMP), Association of Black Students (ABS), Student Worker Alliance (SWA), Students for Life, Hip Hop Congress, and Pride Alliance, which are focused on promoting social justice by co-sponsoring programs with them and promoting their programs.
  • Encouraging students to become more active participants in the center by volunteering at the Center and by participating in program planning.
  • Accumulating resources that are available to the Washington University community such as:
    1. The lending library, which contains periodicals, books, and films that pertain to social justice issues
    2. A binder reference library created to give visitors quick access to the definitions, statistics, articles, and program ideas of the various isms
    3. A "students interested” database built to send regular emails of SJC and SJC community activities
    4. Information about University and local social justice organizations, and how to get involved
